I have an 89 wellcraft with a 3.0 in it. I took it out the other day and it didn't want to plain out very fast but when it did it ran ok, not the best. I took it out the second night and it didn't even want to plain out. This is my first boat and have no clue what to look for. The boat revs great in neutral and in gear out of the water. If it is in the water it wont do much in gear. Can anyone help me out with this?

Where do you have the drive trim when you are trying to get on plane?

I have no clue when the last time this boat was tuned up. I was in the process of buying the stuff to do that with. When i pulled the spark plugs the other day they were wet and smelled of gas. So my guess is that they had become fuel fouled. The guy did tell me that the gas in the boat was old. As far as the question goes about the trim, i tried it in every spot. The motor just wouldnt push the boat past 2000 rpms

If the PO previous owner mentioned the gas was old, that's a clue to remove all the fuel from the tank(s) put fresh in, and re-try, but you may want to have the carb rebuilt, and put new spark plugs in too.

I would start here , complete tune up without a doubt, as well as removal of old gas, oil change, drive pulled-inspect/grease gimbal bearing & u-joints, drive lube drained, inspected and changed, inspect bellows. If you have never done this on this boat and do not know when it was last done, it is a recipe for expensive repairs later.
