By far the OEM Merc manual. Costly? Yes. but worth every penny.

Re: Repair mauals

Too much omitted by non-genuine, and what little is included is often wrong... clymer/seloc are expensive knee-pads/hand towels...

Not just with outboards, I try to use factory manuals where possible. They may be more expensive initially, but they pay for themselves many times over....

I agree, my seloc for my dads Mercruiser says to plug the vaccuum advance while setting the timing. Boats don't have a vaccuum advance. I came on here to find that out. There are other things, but that one just popped into my head. Any manual is better than no manual though. At least you can get a general idea of what's going on.

I would dispute that... I have just been working with a guy whose seloc told him to set the primary pickup at 6*BTDC. The correct setting is 5-7*ATDC. He was wondering why his engine was running so badly.... So, I suggest that no manual IS better than a manual that gives the wrong information, because, with no manual, you will seek out the information, whereas with bad info you will follow it blindly....

What engine do you have? There are a lot of factory manuals available as pdf downloads (for free :D)

Sure would be nice to get some of them to download. I can't seem to find one for an 87 Merc 150 V6...

Re: Repair mauals

Does anyone know where to order a Mercury outboard factory manual for an older outboard engine? I tried their website but could only find current ones. I am looking for a manual for a '93 115HP Merc. The prior owner gave me the Seloc manual but I don't find it very good, as has been explained in this thread. It covers a wide range of engines so often doesn't answer what I'm looking for.

achris,

any pointers on where to find the pdf manuals that can be downloaded for free. I tried the link that cv16 provided , and it no longer works. Any help would be greatly appreciated by all of us. Thank you.

I have a 1977-78 20 hp mecury. thanks

Unfortunately there are no pdf manuals available for the earlier engines.

The manual you need is 90-75512. You may be able to find one on e-bay, or try one of the online Merc dealers, or go to your local Merc shop. If the Merc shop tells you the old manuals are no longer available (I have heard of it being done to try and sell a new engine, believe it or not!), find another shop!

Your manual is 90-976583. Again e-bay, or a dealer. I have seen heaps on e-bay for V6s.

If you want hard copy try www.mercruiserparts.com The manual is 90-136452, of if you're happy with a free PDF download, http://rapidshare.com/files/213240342/70-75-80-90-100-115.rar Password for the file is <ribforum>.

Re: Repair mauals

I just picked up a 20HP 1979 model (SN 5334882). Would the manual 90-75512 work for that motor as well? This is my first Mercury motor and so far I am liking the Johnson's must better. I was going to put my Johnson but I thought that would leave it far to open for jokes.

Thanks

How do I determine what manual I need? I have a 1998 115hp Mercury outboard, 4 cylinder. I bought the boat used and don't have any documentation for it.

You could start in the evenrude forum instead of the mercury/mariner forum.
