1988 Mercury Oil Injected Engine Question

I just bought a 1988 pontoon boat and 1988 Mercury Oil Injected Engine. I've owned boats in the past where I always mixed the oil and gas together. In researching the engine I just bought it would seems as though the oil would be injected instead of mixed. I don't see anyplace to add oil and the owner's agent said he assumed I should mix the gas and oil. HELP!!! What do I do?

There should be at least 1 tank under the cowl of the motor. If there is not one there, there should be one under the back seat of the pontoon I'd think. Start looking for an oil pump/oil lines on the motor and trace them to the source if they are there.

I took the cowling (the cover that runs around the engine) and couldn't see anything that would hold oil. Does the top come off and could that be where it is? There are no lines that would bring oil to the engine from an outside source. Is it ok to mix the oil and gas or does that ruin the engine?

It sounds like you don't have an oil pump and pre-mix is the ONLY way to run your motor without harming it.

Odd that you say its oil injected if it is not. Could it have a different cowl or an oil injection delete mod done to it?

Here's my oil pump/lines on my 150 for reference.

The large green line feeds the pump. The small green line feeds the fuel line with oil. It then goes to the fuel pump and into the carbs.

Nice job with the tygon tubing. That should last a good few years. I do, however, have concerns about the cable ties you've used. They aren't the right ones for fuel lines. They should be like this.... (Merc part #54-816311T)

Interesting. The only std one I have on there is the white one. The others I salvaged and re-used.

Doesn't mean the person before you used the right ones. I see at least 4 'normal' ties in that photo...

The ties are cheap (for you guys) at only 20c each. I checked on www.mercruiserparts.com. In Australia the Merc dealers charge $2 each!!!

I'd love to be able to get a couple of packets (they only come in packets of 100) sent out here, but the online companies make a squillion on postage to Australia....:(:(:(

Thanks for your help. I think the oil injection must have been deleted.

In that case you need to mix at 50:1, use only a TC-W3 rated oil. The Quicksilver Premium Plus (sold by Merc dealers and a few of the big chains like Walmart etc) is the best money can buy.
