I see you all have been through this many times on this forum, but I need some help too. This is my deceased mother-in-laws boat that my wife wants redone. Heres the deal:

The floor was no good. I pulled the carpet and deck up. I am in the process of removing the foam. I do not know anything about boats but that foam it soaked, so I ripped it out, which leads me to my first question,
1. Where can I BUY foam? I would like to go back with the 2x4 strips of foam that were originally put in, unless yall know a
cheaper, more efficient way.

I am going to post some pictures of the project tomorrow. The floor joists are sound yall. I expected them to be rotten too, but they were fiberglassed and I guess I caught it in time. Speaking of fiberglass

2. What kind of fiberglass should I get, and WHERE do I get it at a good price? I am finishing with carpet so I do not need a finished product. When tearing the deck up I noticed that there were two different types of glass, one thicker and stronger, the other flat and smooth. What does that mean for my finish?

Any help would be appreciative. Thanks,

C

Numerous members here have gotten great prices and service from here http://www.uscomposites.com/ on all manner of fiberglassing supplies. If you were to go back in with a pourable foam, they have that as well. If you want a sheet foam, many of us are using pink or blue sheet foam from Lowes/HD. I used pool noodles in my project.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll go with the pool noodles also, that seems pretty easy.

I've got another little problem that I created myself. I was using a circular saw to cut out the floor and went to close to the side. I put a 2 inch slash through the bottom of the boat. Do I just use the same fiberglass for the floor as for the boat? Is there a siliconproduct that I should use as well?

check out page 76 on OOPs post for his peanut butter recipe. Use it to fix your slash. Just put a piece of clear plactic on the outside of the hull. then from the inside give it a couple of coats of gelcoat then lay in the peanut butter then glass it over. Make sure and dirll some exploratory holes in your stingers. to confirm they are not wet. with that much water intrusion i would be highly suspect that they are not wet underneath the fiberglass. if not then you truly are very lucky. YOu should also drill some exploratory holes on the inside of your transom about 1 inch up from the hull to confirm it is not wet. With that old of a boat and that much water i'm just sayin...

Ok, the transom, that is the back of the boat where the motor mounts to the hull right?? Ok if thats right, I do not want to drill all the way through then. You're saying just drill through the fiberglass and check the wood underneath right?

Thanks for the help, I know Ill need more so Ill post pics tonight.

Re: Floor Overhaul - 1976 Glassmaster

I am currently redoing the floor in my 1976 SeaRay bowrider. I have a book called "Runabout Renovation" by Jim Anderson. If you are redoing your floor I highly recommend his book. He's done hundreds and has great advise.
On the subject of foam he recommends going to Evercoat or Boat Armor for foams for marine applications. These are closed cell foams and you just need a 3/4 inch hole after the floor is in place. It will fill and seal the voids plus won't break down over time.
If you're going to all the investment and time to redo the floor I suggest the spray in foam for both ease of install and longevity of the product.

This is the route I am going as I have done considerable research on closed cell foams.

My 2 cents anyway.
