I have an overheating problem with my boat engine. The motor is overheating at normal idle but cools itself down when at high idle. I have replaced the thermostat without any change. I am using it at a Missouri freshwater lake.

The motor is an 7.5L OMC 460 in a 21' 1989 Four Winns Liberator.

Howdy, ...........yeah I used to have one of those.......

You probably need to replace the raw water pump. Have you EVER ran the engine without having the "muffs" connected and the water on?

If you did, you destroyed the pump. You also may have impeller fragments in the oil or power steering cooler. It doesn't take much to plug them and ALL your cooling water MUST go thru those cooler

If you haven't replaced the raw water pump in the last couple of years you need to do it now.

Also, if you have not pulled the drive and checked the alignment, you absolutely need to do that before you run the boat any more....if the alignment is good you can lube the yoke and coupler which should be done every year anyway......

Cheers,

That's text book impeller malfunction. Get the whole kit I usually do everything even the bottom plate when I do those.

Good luck.
