I'm new to working on outboards. I was just given a 1960 40hp electramatic and I'm still waiting for my repair manual and gen belt. I can't get it to start since the belt broke. Does it need the belt in order to fire?

Thanks

No, it should run without the gen belt, all the ign system is under the flywheel.

Thanks. I'll have to dig deeper and see what else happened when the belt broke.

The above reply is correct, but there is no such thing as a 1960 Electramatic. But if there were, it would run without the belt.

I hope you ordered the correct manual.

Really? The info given to me was that it was a 1960. the motor says Johnson electramatic super seahorse and the serial # is J27398. Unfortunatly the model # is unreadable but we are trying to get it figured out before they ship the manual.

update. figured out why the belt broke and no spark after that, the woodruff key sheared so only the flywheel was turning.
