Ok first be gentle I?m new to working on boats.

I have 82 Bayliner Capri with AQ125A and 270 outdrive. WAS going to take kids to lake tomorrow but wanted to check everything out first. Put on the earmuffs and started the boat and no water out the exhaust. So removed cap on heat exchanger and no water from the impeller side of the motor.

OK the troubleshooting began. First checked the impeller and looks like new to my surprise. So problem has to be from impeller to water intake. Took off hose and put water straight to the impeller tube. That worked so I thought I must have clog in drive or at water inlet. However after running water thru tube backwards there is no obstruction.

Put all back together and thought I would try again. After 7 hours of looking and scratching head I decided to rev the engine just to see the outcome and BINGO we have water to the heat exchanger.

Shouldn't I have water running through the system even at an idle?

Can't find any reason that there would be low suction. Just don' want to damage anything.

Hi,
Sounds like she is sucking in air. Check: Impeller cover gasket, hose clamps, and at outdrive check the clamp at the hose gooseneck which usually the neck is eroded and seal is not great. I found on mine that the rubber hose to the gooseneck was on backwards and pinched as the outdrive was in the lowered position....that one took a while to figure out :) There is also a seal in the back of the impeller that comes with a repair kit. Dumb question to ask and sorry for asking but is the hole on the bottom of the outdrive below the earmuffs plugged? Yes the exhaust should spray water mist and random splases from build up during idle. My engine when up to temp the exhaust manifold is barely warm to the touch. I hope this helps!! Happy boating.

No the hole is not plugged in the bottom of drive.

I have traced the entire line and checked for a leak. So far nothing shows signs of loss of suction.

If the hole is not plugged when hooked to water hose muffs it wont get suction on the garden hose. Just remember to remove the plug before going to the lake:)

Look above where you are putting the muffs and cover the holes w some elec tape. Better yet, drop it in a bucket. HAve same boat. You are sucking air. Doubt you have a problem.
