Where would it be located in a 1982 Imperial with a Mercruiser 120 and Alpha one drive (originally came with pre alpha I believe). I only need to know because I am replacing the throttle box, and need to know if its in the throttle control box or not.

Re: Shift Interruptor Switch

The switch is located on the engine, not in the gear shift. Follow the control cables back to the engine. One will go to the throttle, the other to the shift mechanism. Look around on the shift mechanism for a couple wires leading into it. Follow the wires, find the switch! Joyjoy. Or, put another way, working on the gearshift will have zero impact to the shift interrupt switch. Are you working on the gearshift because the its not shifting correctly? If so, you might be working on the wrong part. Shifting troubles can be there, or in the back, or both. Might do a little troubleshooting first. Have a buddy run the shifter while you watch how things work in the back. You can get a good handle on things before you spend time and money on something thats not going to fix your problem. Its summertime after all...

The throttle control is loose, hard to explain. It is the type that you have to pull out to be have throttle control and not be in gear. Normally when i pull that out I can start it in any throttle position. Now it till only start when in the out position, and 1/4 throttle position. I have to turn key and hold it.... then move the throttle up till i hear it start to start. Its almost like its trying to find neutral.

I figured the throttle box since loose, seeing as it isnt coming all the way out (when i pull it in) to disengage it from the gears.

Re: Shift Interruptor Switch

I'm sorry Im getting the two switches mixed up. I believe this problem lies in the NEUTRAL safety switch. And was wondering if it was in my throttle control box or elsewhere

It seems as everything just needs tightened up. I suppose i'll try that first.... but new throttle contol boxes are only $200. I figure the reason i have to pull the lever out, and push it forward a little bit to catch neutral, is because the neutral safety switch is loose. Like i said i'll try tightening evrything up tonight and report back later.

the switch is held in with 2 small screws, they could be loose or the arm on the switch is busted or bent. THe controls loosen up and wear, there are plastic bushings in there.. I love (hate) taking them apart and greasing them up.. take your time, there are pictures out there.. just need to do a little googleing.
