Hello, I have a 1987 4 HP Johnson and I has disassembled the carb to the best of my ability. I can not seem to get part # 16 in the diagram above out. The float seat and valve. It is really tight in there and I don't have about stripped out the flathead slot trying to get it out. It looks like the carb rebuild kit I bought has this piece in it so I am going to attempt to get it out again.

So, question 1 is any thoughts on how to get this thing out? I am not wanting to use a tap and dye or anything like that in fear of damaging the rest of the carb.

Questio 2 is simply what do I clean and soak this thing in? I went to Pep Boys and apparently all they have is spray carb cleaner, which I bought some of. I also bought some Gumout concentrate (the fuel additive) because I could do a little of A and B which would be to use the spray cleaner as well as soaking the rest in the Gumout overnight. Also, should I soak the plastic float chamber in gumout or use the spray cleaner on it?

Will this be effective? The carb really doesn't look dirty at all but the engine was running rough, idling rough and you constantly had to choke it to keep it running.

The float needle valve and seat will come in the carb kit. If they were put in too tight they can be buggers to remove. You may want to direct a little heat at it. The spray is fine, just make sure you remove all those soft plugs to clean the passages. The kit will have new ones. You may want to wait for the kit to make sure every thing is there.

Thanks... it was a bugger to get out. Had to really crank on it with some vise grips.

So I guess soaking is overrated in that everybody seems to only carry the spray can stuff...

Soaking is really a good way to get a cab body clean. The stuff is caustic and nasty on your hands. I haven't used it in years. I used to keep a bucket of it to dip parts in. Good quality spray cleaner works very well also.
