Hi Guys need some advice on timeing a 4.3 l volvo penta 1998. i had recently rebearing the motor and repalced the cam shaft i fitted back the motor up and it wont star gets fuel and spark. When i put the new cam in i align the the balancer gear mark at 6 o clock and the cam gear timing mark at 12 o clock the i put the crank shaft sprocket timing mark at 12 o clock and the big sproket that goes over the cam shaft gear at 6 o clock along with the timing chain the chain had just a tad slack on it i am wonderingif this was done right the 1 cylinder was at tdc before i started this procedure. if it is done wrong can the timing chain be redone without pulling out the motor?

thanks

Re: Timing problems

I would remove the valve cover on the number 1 side and bump the engine over with a remote button. watch the rocker arms. when the intake closes the piston will soon finish the intake stroke and will come up on the compression stroke. when piston reaches the top ( TDC) your valves should be closed, the mark on your dampner at TDC (0) and your roter pointing to number one. Yes you can remove the chain and reset the cam crank timming with the motor in the boat unless you have no access to the timming cover.

Re: Timing problems

Exactly what is this
"i align the the balancer gear mark at 6 o clock "
explain
"and the cam gear timing mark at 12 o clock "

You install the cam, install the crankshaft gear with the "dot" at 12:00.
slip cam chain onto cam gear, install on camshaft with the "timing dot" facing the crank "dot" install cam bolts and lock tabs.
TDC means nothing at this part of the build. It can be done if you have the room for the harmonic balancer puller and can loosen the pan bolts enough to lower the oil pan.

Re: Timing problems

the balancer is the first gear at the top then below is the cam gear the the sprocket goes over the cam gear with the chain around the crank shaft gear

Re: Timing problems

My mistake, this is a balance shaft motor then.

Re: Timing problems

reread your first post and that sounds correct, did you install the dist correctly. #1 at TDC compression

Re: Timing problems

have you checked compression to make sure the valves are closing and the rockers aren't to tight?
