I was just given this engine on a 14 aluminum boat. It has not been in the water or run since 1995. It seems to have good compression and turns over fine. I have not tried to start it yet. I have ordered a manual and am waiting for it's arrival. I know I will have to rebuild the Carb, Water pump, then replace the coils, points, condenser, plugs, hoses and wiring. Any help or suggestions that anyone has would be appreciated. And one more thing does this engine have a fuel pump? If not how does that work. Pressurized tank? The aluminum is in good shape on the boat. I will replace the seats and the transum.
Thanks

Welcome to iboats.

There is a good thread in the FAQ entitled "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard"

You have a good list there. Waterpump is a must. There is a lot of knowledge on here and many guys on this forum that are very familiar with that outboard. Smart choice ordering the manual. I would also change the gearcase oil and seals to ensure that there is no water present.

Yes, I am going to replace the gearcase oil and seals too. I am a bit confused about the lack of a fuel pump though.

Did you get the pressurized (two-line) tank and line with the motor? That motor does not have a fuel pump.

I know. But I think there is a retrofit fuel pimp available. Does anyone have any information about a fuel pump for this motor?

If you got the pressure tank with it and it works, I'd stick with it. They work fine.

Even if I had to go out on ebay and find a tank and fitting I'd still stick with it. But that's just me. :)

OK, I have the tank and the parts for the Carb, coils points and condenser should be here this week. I am still a bit confused about this 2 line gas tank. I can see how it would work if the engine is running. But for a first time start with no fuel in the carb, how will it start. There must be some way to pressurise the tank for the first start. How does this happen?

If you bought the correct tank it will have a button which you push to fill the gas line, fuel bowl and prime the carb. I have posted a pic of my tank showing the button. I seem to remember having another type of tank with a plunger type system similar to a coleman lantern, but I may just be thinking of my old coleman lanterns.:D:D But there has to be some type of pump on the tank or you got the wrong kind. I have about a 12 foot fuel line between my tank and motor and I recently replaced the hoses. I think it took maybe 5 to 7 pushes of the button to fill my system. Make sure the cap is on tight and there are no air or fuel leaks in the system.

Yeah, there were two styles, the early style with a metal plunger and the later style with a plastic button. They switched over sometime during the 57 model year. The button on the later style would be easy to miss if you were unfamiliar with the system. But then I've seen a lot of old metal OMC single line tanks listed on ebay as pressure tanks too. I hope that's not what happened :( !

You're right Todd.....there is a tank on my local Craigslist being advertised as an "old metal OMC PRESSURE gas tank" but the picture shows it is obviously a single line tank.
Also forgot to add Golfky.....you'll know if your system is holding pressure by opening the tank cap.....it'll hiss when the air escapes if it's holding pressure.
