Okay, I'm not sure if this will make sense, but I'll try to be as clear as possible.

I have a 1982 60 HP Evinrude Model:E60ELCNM on a Sea Nymph Bass Attacker console steering. Right now when I start the engine in neutral, let it warm up, and then shift to forward there is quite a bit of play before I get to a point where the throttle actually starts giving gas to the motor. It really lugs at this point as it is like it should be getting gas but it's not.

There is a positive locking position on the throttle when I go from neutral to forward to signify that it's in forward, but it travels another 2 inches or so before it actually begins to give the engine gas. I confirmed this tonight by taking the cover off of the engine and watching how the two lines interact. The inside line handles forward/neutral/reverse and the outside line controls how much gas is given to the motor. When I come back from top throttle to neutral the throttle line goes down steadily as it should and stops only when it reaches the positive lock position to transfer from forward to neutral.

How do I go about remedying the situation? Should I adjust the idle speed, or is it a throttle cable adjustment?

Thanks in advance, I can get pictures if that would be clearer for everyone.

I would start by looking at the roller sleeve on the lower carb where it meets the cam! Those sleeves often get brittle over time and break, you may even find the pieces laying at the bottom. If the sleeve is broke, it will allow a gap between the sleeve and the cam thus causing excessive travel in the linkage.
Hope this gives you a starting point!

Cheers!

The hardware itself looks alright. I don't believe that it is worn. The sleeve that goes on the cable takes a fair amount of tension to get moving. That seems to be where the problem is starting at.

Any thoughts on how to adjust this?

I have the same problem on a 1978, 70 hp evinrude. Slop seems to be in single lever linkages to shift linkages? No one shows positioning in remote control station.

Have you tried taking up slack with the adjustment wheel on the engine end of the cable? Just a thought! Might/might not work.
