The above motor was not starting immediately but eventually started after turning the key many times. We examined the motor with the cover off and found the starter solenoid was not traveling far enough up the shaft to engage the flywheel. We also noticed the starter body was getting hot but were told this is normal because of high amps going through it. We sprayed the solenoid shaft with WD40 and the problem actually got worse, possibly because grease slid down the shaft.
At any rate, does anyone have comments on replacing the solenoid, including a diagram of how to do it, and where are the best places to buy starter solenoids for this motor?

You don't want to put more than a drop or two of oil on the moving parts.

Is the batttery fully charged and in good shape?

Check all connections, clean each one very well, grounds too.

The part you are describing is the starter bendix. It's a multipart assembly usually consisting of a spacer, spring, nut and the starter gear. That assembly needs a very light oil for lubrication. Grease is too heavy and may cause it not to work properly. It's normal for the starter to get hot, that's why you only want to crank it for a few seconds each time. Also possible the brushes inside the starter are worn. If they don't make good contact, you loose power in the starter itself. Bombardier sells brush sets for their starters as well as replacement bendix kits.

Thanks for the advice! Are there any reliable internet stores you recommend to order these parts?

I would try your local Johnrude dealer first. I bought a set of brushes for my starter a couple weeks ago and it was less than $25.00.
