Fluid leaks from the hose fitting to the trim cylinder on my 1979 Merc 115...can I tighten down or do I need a new hose?

Check the area on the cylinder where the fitting screws in. I had a small crack there that required a new cylinder.

If it leaks past the threads, inspect the threads, as they do strip out. If the threads are OK, you can try some teflon tape.

I had a similiar problem because over the years my family had been tightening it and added teflon tape to it. The tape will work but the problem is the fittin gis Stainless Steel and the housing is aluminium. So the fitting will always strip the housing out.

I had to go as far as retapping my hole a larger size. I wouldn't recommend this size I had to buy a tap and cut it down since I used an 1/4" NPT to 1/2" inverted flare fitting.
