I'm not trying to advertise this O/B here but I just want to get an idea of how much we would have to make up for the difference if we sold this 2 stroke 1999 Merc and went with a new 4 stroke 30 HP.

This one came with the rig when my Daughter bought it off Craiigslist last year. As preventive maintenance I had the Merc shop do the impeller and had them put on an new OEM carb.

This season I had them do the prop seal due to an oil leak.

So far I have about $1000 into it. It runs great but sometimes stalls at idle like when you're idling while waiting for a ramp spot to open up when pulling the boat out.

It has a new fuel hose and I figure the next step is to bring it back to the shop and have them rebuild the fuel pump since it's over 10 years old and could probably use a new fuel pump diaphragm. That's my guess. Even if it pressure test OK I'd rather have them rebuild the pump. I'll have them pressure test the fuel system fittings for an air leak too cause I think it gets starved for fuel at low idle. I have to pull out the choke to get the hot motor again.

So I don't mind doing these repairs because they are all wear items anyway. Other wise it runs great.

But I think I have her convinced now that if we sell this one for maybe $1500 (is it worth anymore?) She's a purist and loves the pristine Adirondack lakes and I've been driving home the point that no matter how well it runs it still spews burned oil into those lakes!

She could move up to a 30 hp, boats max with power tilt and be worry free with a new outboard and probably a 5 year warranty to boot.

I figure Merc, Yammy or Honda . . . (whichever is the lightest one) If we could find one at the end of the season like a dealer left over for say $3500 minus the $1500 for the sale of the old one we might come in around $2000 for the swap.

Any thoughts appreciated!

well, in my humble opinion, any boat, motor, actually anything, is only worth
what any buyer is willing to pay.

just start high, and settle

just my 2 cents

G.O.F. has spoken.... But this time I agree with him... It's worth what a buyer will pay for it... I think my boat is worth $50,000, but I'm only likely to get $38,000 for it.... So, what's it worth?

If you trade it at a dealer you'll get the lowest price.... Try selling it on the open market...

Re: 1999 25 Merc 2 stroke How much is it worth?

Update: picked up the boat today from the Merc repair shop that does my work.

He solved several issues (I hope) have not test drove it on the water yet.

First issue was she had to always walk back to the o/b to choke it even though the dash board key says "push in to choke".

That problem was a small electric solenoid that sits on top of the carb. This solenoid has a small rod that moves into the carb. the small end of the rod was gone or broken off rendering the choke by key switch useless. New Solenoid was $61.

I never new that it was not working cause I thought maybe it worked by pressing key in only on certain model motors ( It's a 1999 Monark 14 foot side console).

So I always pulled the choke on the o/b. Now she can choke from dash and it will unchoke automatically after if warms up.

The stalling at idle problem was not the fuel pump diaphragm. It was a new OEM carb last year and a new fuel pump comes mounted on the side of the new carb.

He said the stalling was probably the fuel mixture screws needing adjustment as it was probably loading up on fuel and stalling at idle.

Total bill $142.60 (including the solenoid). If everything works now, price was cheap!

And he did it in 1 day . . . sweet!

Still want to dump the o/b for a new 4 stroke with EFI and ELPT at the end of the season though.
I want her not to have to worry about tinkering with this o/b from time to time.

My 4 stroke was bought new in 2007 with a 5 year warranty and other than a new impeller at 3 years and changing the oil, lower unit oil and fuel filter and plugs once a season . . . all I've ever had to do is turn the key and I'm off.

2 strokes are nice and light and very responsive, but especially a 1999 that who knows how good the former owners maintained and ran it? She's a Women and doesn't need to tinker with it as older 2 strokes can be finicky.
