You just added one extra vowel to bread is all. I am sure it was just a typo.

I wouldn't be so sure... From a lot of the posts I see here, a lot of people lack the most fundamental grammar and spelling skills. As for punctuation, let's not go there....

HA! I work part time in a hardware store. When we close there is a NEON sign on the door that states the hours and says "Closed". Even then we have people coming up to the door and - imagine!- find it locked! We had to lock it because they kept on coming in! Lights off, we're closing the registers... doesn't matter. But, I only need ... a washer, bait, nails... etc...

Did I mention, I WANT TO GO HOME!

I started this post to point out how stupid the people making comments on the news were. "They should build bigger fences" "Nobody listens to signs"

Well, some of the people making comments on Dockside Chat seem to fit into that category too, Thajeffski.

Warning signs are equivalent to putting locks on your doors.

I work for DOT in the traffic division. We are constantly being mandated to change the design of signs that "some people" find difficult to understand.

So it, in my opinion, makes absolutly NO difference what type, size, or color of sign you put up. People are going to do what they want no matter what. The only thing those signs do is limit the liability of whichever governing body from ambulance chasers and protect the tax payers.
Here in S. IL. 16 miles of I-57 is down to one lane for resurfacing.
In less than a week we have had 3 major accidents killing four and
injuring many more. One was a 7 vehicle pileup with a semi catching
fire and closing both directions for hours. All were caused by faster
traffic running into traffic slowing down for the lane closure.

Their are huge flashing message board signs for miles before the lane
closure.

It's nothing to do with being smart or needing to be told how to write. It's all about making it easier for the reader..... If it's too hard to read, people don't read it.... People post here (in the engine and boat forums) to get help with a problem, yes? So why make it difficult for the people who could help? I see a post that's too hard to read... I move to the next one.

I'm not setting myself up as some genius, all I'm saying it that literacy standard are dropping....

The signs are as useful as the notice on the pack of cigarettes that smoking can/will kill you. People still smoke.

Some people are just stupid and signs aren't going to help stupid.

Those signs made me nervous and rethink my life.
Now I roll my own, no scary warnings on my ciggie box.
I feel safer now and save a ton of money.:p

It didn't work out so well for me. By the time I would get a pack, look at the clock, figure out how long it took me...I was loosing money:confused:

That is true all over. We have mandated now that construction warning signs be placed at 3-5 miles out from the zone. My feeling is that we have so many signs, for so many miles, the public becomes numb to them.

By the time they actually get to the zone, they have already talked on the phone, adjusted the radio, and completely forgotten there was anything going on.

There are signs everywhere. On the road, on the water, on private property, and so on. I think that people in general have become numb to them.

I believe less signage would create more awareness. Unfortunatley, the learning curve to get back to that would be catastrophic.

Alas, I am but a small perch in a world of Muskie, so signs I will design:rolleyes:

I agree completely. I especially can't stand the ones set up for totally inactive construction zones. The worst is the PA turnpike. You see all these warning signs for upcoming construction....then when you get there all the signs are covered up and the zone is inactive. Talk about being made numb to the signs.

Chris,
You might as well go find something productive to do.

I agree...but...I don't want to be one of those innocent victims along the way:eek:

Now, if we could figure out a way to get them all on the same stretch of road at the same time...

We aren't worried about Shakespeare, we just would like high school graduates to be able to read a 5 word sign and understand it.

Hey Chris, eye halve a spelling chequer:D
