Hello everyone,

So, my father has a 71 Evinrude fisherman 6hp (6102G). The thing is sweet and runs like a top.
Well, it USED to run like a top.

He lent it to my uncle to use on a fishing trip, and my uncle broke off the gear shift handle.

I looked at a diagram on the ishopmarine website, and the part #is 378615. This baby runs for about $115.00 . I might be able to find a used one somewhere around where I live for cheaper (i am hoping)

But , I cannot seem to figure out how to get the gearshift handle to come off. I am not to enthused to dig too deep in this motor. It just seems to me that this wouldnt take too much time to replace.

Am I wrong? do you have to separate the exhaust housing from the gearcase and really get in there?

any tips would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Try and search out local marine salvage yards for a used one.
I am afraid you are going to have to remove the powerhead to replace the gearshift handle.

Re: 71 Evinrude Fisherman Gearshift handle (broke off).

my gearshift lever broke on a '63 18 hp and it was the beginning of the end. First the part was expensive, but "all I had to do was" undo 2 bolts. Well this is a heavily used salt water motor, so the bolts were fused. Never could get it fixed, even with a whole 'notehr parts motor, an old timer mechanic who, until confronted with mine, could fix any old motor, etc etc

So hate to say it, but with the old ones, be sure you can take it apart before buying parts. And if you buy a parts motor be sure you can take it apart, too. That pot metal doesn't last forever. Be careful prying and wrenching on it.

Don't be too hard on your uncle. All of the 6 hp shift levers break off if you barely hit them. I bolted on an L made of aluminum on mine when it broke off, but there was quite a bit left of the old one.

Have you tried to attach a pair of vise grips to it ;) Would not be the first time I have seen that.

Yea, i took the time to fab up a steel handle and bent a small 1/8 steel plate over the top or the nub and welded the steel handle to that so it slides nicely over what was left.

no slop in it really, but i tapped some bolt holes to secure it just a little more to the nub that was left.

worked great!
but , for some reason now, cooling water was leaking out somewhere in the block ( i think), and it died. I do not see any cracks in the block,

Now there is no spark to get it running to pinpoint just where it was leaking. So the battle continues.

71 motor = boat anchor. i wish i/we had cash for a better one.

thanks again!
cheers!

hi.this shift lever goes into uper part of midsection, and in hiden part of this lever is smal o ring.maybe this oring can alow to flow water.my advice is to unbolt powerhad:6 bolts, 15 minutes of work, and fix this lever in right way.
and you will have to replace gasket under powerhad(between powerhad and midsection)
