I got the carburetor off (finally ..;)) ..now, I got it disassembled and right off the bat I'd noticed something strange.

There is a copper, brass, or bronze tube that has a much smaller sized tube inside of that, however, the smaller tube is not centered inside the larger tube. In fact, when peering down into the larger tube, I can clearly see that the smaller tube is sorta curved (not kinked or anything). At the one end, the smaller tube rest against the one side of the larger tube. Could this be my mid to WOT problem???

It's currently soaking in a can of Berrymans and I will use compressed air tomorrow to blow through the passages.

Another thing is that the float appeared to be installed upside down compared to the float shown at http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=2a1bcb6cbfcab4ebd93c7b35200836ac&catalog_id=0&siteid=1 . The curved notch was facing up rather than down.

Please advise.
Thanks!

the tube is suppose to have that shape mine has it also....make sure you run a wire in them to clean them....use a bread tie..then spray them with cleaner and compressed air...

Make sure to remove the welch plugs so you get a good clean with the Berrymans. Also run a fine wire threw the jets to make sure they are clean.

The dished part on the float goes down like in the pic. And I was always told not to mess with the tubes:eek:

Hope this helps

Re: 85 Johnson 30HP

Yeah, this is my second time taking the carb off and going through it. The first time I took it apart, it had a port that was clogged and I was able to unclog it with a shot of air, ...I thought (thought:rolleyes:) that I figured out the problem. I know, I know , I know, ...you guys stressed to let it soak over night & blow out with compressed air, BUT when I seen the price of a can of Berrymans Chem Dip $25, I took a short cut. I cleaned everything with a can of spray carb cleaner the best I could.

Reassembled, took to lake, ..fired up fine, let warm up a little then slowly eased to full thottle. It ran at open throttle for a few seconds then bogged down (but didn't die like before).

It seemed like a step in the right direction, and I knew I had to get that carb off again and follow the right steps this time around, ...no short cuts.

Thanks all for your help!

Re: 85 Johnson 30HP

I'm kinda skeptikal, ..If I take the welch plugs out will I be able to get them back in???? Or how important is it that they are in there??

I've worked on Mikuni and Q-Jet carbs that had similar plugs, BUT it seemed they were only there to deter people from adjusting.

What's a good base setting for the idle adjustment from lightly seated position??

Please advise.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

A carb kit should have new welch plugs in it. I have taken the plugs out, and found all kinds of gunk. When I put new ones in, I use a 3/8 drive ratchet extension with the socket end against the plug. Then give a firm rap with a hammer to seat the plug. Video on youtube.

To remove, drill a hole in the center and use a screwdriver.

1-1/2 Is a good starting point on needle adjustment.

Thanks for the response.

So, using the old plugs is not a good idea??? I didn't buy the kit, this carb was rebuilt before we got the boat BUT it sat for a few years with no Stabil in it.

The gaskets were in great shape so I reused 'em.
