hello all,
new to this forum, i have a 1964 evinrude 5.5hp,it runs great at an idle but when i throttle it, it revs as is supposed to but only for about five seconds, then slowly dies back down, it smokes pretty bad at higher rev and hardly smokes at an idle. i installed new plugs, checked the points visually not yet with a feeler gauge i'll bring them home from work tomorrow and do so, and cleaned the carb extra good,i dont think its a fuel problem but it could be, there is also a decent amount of oil in my barrel of water, maybe it has a cylinder not firing correctly? basically i need some advice from some experts and any suggestions would be extremely help full........thanks

Do yourself a favor and do a compression test. The compression test will give you info like cylinder condition, whether or not your head gasket is shot and how well the reeds are working. Pay attention to the "pump up" of compression. It is just as important as the reading.

Assuming it (compression) is good then the timing of the points is critical on those old mag engines. Set them up right by ohm meter and then make sure the timing is linked correctly to the primary pickup. (See your manual for details). If it runs good at idle you most likely have good compression. My first impression tells me look at the timing. Remember, timing does play a big part in the burning of properly mixed fuel.

it feels as if it has good compression, but i will check it with a compression tester, i will also check the point gap etc, and i forgot to mention that it sat for about three years if that may be a factor in the condition of the reed valve assembly, thanks for the info.......

Before you do anything, get it out of that barrel and on a boat, then see if you still have the problem. While I'm on the subject, are you trying to run it with the hood on? Forget it, they won't run in a barrel with the hood on.

You could have something exotic wrong with the motor, but don't go looking for trouble that might not exist.

Re: 64 evinrude 5.5hp wont rev

today i removed all the ingition parts and cleaned them reinstalled everything readjusted the points and timed it , took it out on the water and ran it and it stilll has the same issues, but why i had it out it seemed to me that it was getting to much fuel so i disconnected the fuel line and ran it just on the fuel that was in the bowl of the carb and it ran perfect for the minute or so that it took for the fuel to run out, on the primer bulb on the fuel line it sounds like there is a check valve in it, is it possible that something in there could be malfuntioning to allow to much fuel getting sucked it at one time causing it to bog down? any info would be helpfull, thanks
