The hole appears to be made by soemthing escaping from within the gear housing. I'd slap a new SEI lower on there and go boating.

Shattered pinion gear would be my guess. I will try to post pictures, I deal with that daily. Tore down an OMC Cobra today and had to work through that hole to cut the pinion nut off. Not a fun job. JJuday

Yea I kind of thought it looked like it came from the inside out also. Could this be caused from going from forward to reverse to quickly? Also is the lower unit hard to replace.

Well just for fun i decided to Make a aluminum patch and JB weld it, filled it with fluid in hopes of a small miracle and get to use the boat for the family camping trip this weekend but:( no such luck. Forward works but reverse will not engage. Back to the drawing board:mad:

That's alright, I probably would have tried that too. :D

Looks like a new lower. Good luck.

Really JB Weld is made to patch stuff up. Not for permanent repair. Most people use it to try to get by for a while.

If you use it and it gets you by for a while, no matter how long that while is then it did it's job.

Now if you are trying to per fix something it's gonna work just as good as the money you put into it....... $5

Re: this cant be good

yea i was just hoping for the weekend. The whole family is going to racoon lake and I have been feverishly working on this beast cosmetically to get it ready. Ive only had it 4 about 3 weeks. Almost got the entire interior done and worked through a carb issue and now this 2 days before we leave. Thats boating I guess:(
