Hi,

I have a 1972 Evinrude 25hp motor model 25253. The engine will run, however it does not have spark going to the top cylinder.

Sorry

I dunno where to start.

Please help.

Thanks!!!!

Points, condensers and coils under the flywheel, good place to start.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I see a bolt on top of the flywheel and two on the flywheel guard legs? Is that all I have to take off to get there?

Also, How do the coils work? Is it one coil per cylinder?

There is one coil per cylinder. The coils generate electricity and the points control when that electricity is sent to the sparkplugs. After taking the flywheel off, clean and reset the points. Sometimes that is all you need, and it saves you from buying an ignition kit that you might not need.

OK....I got the recoil off!

LOL.

So now I am at the flywheel. Is it a regular threaded nut on the flywheel? Before I start cranking on it.

Thanks!!

I use a harmonic balancer puller to remove the flywheel.
The nut holding the flywheel on the shaft should have regular threads, I haven't come across one that wasn't. It is torqued on to about 50 lbs-force, so it may be tough to get off.

Perfect! I'll have to get a puller tomorrow and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help!

There is a "cover" over the bolt holes where I would screw in the puller. Does that just pop off? or pry off?

I am not sure what you mean about the cover. Usually, the there is a ring of somesort or a "cup" for engaging the recoil that bolts/screws to the flywheel with three fasteners. Unscrew the cup and that should lift right off, and the three holes are used to pull the flywheel.

Re: 1972 25hp Model 25253 - No Spark Top Plug

Here is a procedure I made awhile back.

How to remove a flywheel
Tools: Harmonic balancer puller (chicken foot puller) 3 grade 8 bolts 3 washers that will thread into the 3 holes on the top of the flywheel. Can of penetrant (PB Blaster, WD40 etc.) 18?-24? pipe wrench. 2lb. Hammer.
Many auto part stores have loaner tool programs. Use proper tools and procedures and the job will get done right.

Loosen the center flywheel nut, spray penetrant on the crank/ flywheel then finger tighten the nut back on and loosen it one and a half turns.(leaving the flywheel nut on will keep the flywheel from jumping anywhere when it comes loose.)
Place the harmonic balancer puller into position, and install the 3 grade 8 bolts and washers (make sure that they thread well into the flywheel, but not too far as they could damage ignition components.)
Tighten the center bolt of the puller while holding the puller, (use the pipe wrench to hold a leg on the puller if needed.) Get the puller good and tight. It should pop and be loose.
If it didn?t come loose, ?rap? the center puller bolt on the top with a 2lb hammer. If it still doesn?t pop, tighten the puller some more, then ?rap? the puller bolt again. Keep repeating until it pops. (hammer hits are rated-- Tap, Rap, Light swing, Heavy swing)
Some people just let it set overnight under tension and it is loose in the morning. I have used a hair dryer to gently heat up an aluminum flywheel under tension and that worked.
If your flywheel has been extremely difficult to remove, make sure you inspect the underside of the flywheel, and check you?re ignition components for rub damage. This is an indication that the flywheel was over torqued and caused the flywheel to contact the ignition components. In this case replace the flywheel.

Reassembly?..Tools: Torque wrench and a strap wrench.
Use a torque wrench and the proper torque rateing in the OEM manual. Many people on this forum can help find the proper torque for you. Use the strap wrench to hold the flywheel. Some torques are in inch pounds and others are foot pounds ect. Here is a easy online torque converter. http://www.pitt.edu/~rsup/touqueconv.html

You can make a strap wrench from an old belt and a piece of wood. Secure the belt close to the buckle onto the wood with screws.

I got the flywheel off!!!!

So....what do I do now? How do I know which coil goes to which cylinder?

Got it!

Swapped condensers, no change.

Swapped coils and the issue followed the coil.

Oddly enough the one that is bad looks like it's been replaced.

I ordered 2 coils since the working one is actually cracked.

Not bad for my first outboard fix.

Thanks for the help!! I'll let you know how it goes once I get the coils.

Thats Great!:D

You may consider replacing points and condenser while you have the flywheel removed. Points get pitted over time, and condensers can fail.

Just a thought.... do not put any anti seize on the flywheel taper, or the taperd shaft. Keep that dry.
