hello, I have a 1983 johnson 60 hp outboard. When I put it in reverse the engine comes out of the water. What would make it do this?

Do you have power tilt and trim, is the reverse lock working, how fast is the idle set?

no tilt and trim, manual. I dont know if it is working, I dont know how to check it. The idle is low won't idle good on its own.

Go to the OEM website and look at the parts breakdown (exhaust housing) and look at how it is put togeather.

did you have your trim pin in (the pin is located mid motor between the leg and transom mounts) its usually rusty and has a plastic pull piece on one side. Also there is a lever under the motor to operate the reverse lock.
mine is on the port side.

I have an '81 50 and on the starboard(right)side motor mount just above the transom there is a lever that you can move forward or back that locks the engine down.

Be careful doing this, if you hit something in the water the engine won't flip up and you are way more likely to do damage to the engine and the boat, I personally never lock mine just for that reason.

Reverse will still work you just have watch how much throttle you give it.
