a lot of people have been asking about the restoration of my bayliner on the hull extension thread.....so i thought i would show you some of the highlights.

the whole purpose of the bayliner was to have a boat to play in while i extended the hull on the searay. also, it was allways my intention to sell the boat for money for the interior of the big project.

the boat is a 1990 bayliner capri with a 3l mercrusier.
the boat had soft floors....wet foam and a ton of other problems....gimbal berring and some motor issues....but the interior was totally shot from the hot lake mead sun.

this was the boat the day mrs oops and i drove from kelowna canada to vegas to pick it up.

once we got out of the vegas areaand closer to iboats home salt lake.....the harsh reality of winter set in (january 08)

picgroup5177.jpg

lol....it was a long way home with the boat.

picgroup5199.jpg

when we got home and the summer came we had a great time on the little bayliner.....

note the back rest !

interiorset5009.jpg

a lot of iboaters were on that boat....robj, yar, sean floats, ondarvr, noklu and a few others....
but with the sucessful launch and running of the big searay, finally it was time to gut and re-fit the bilgeliner.

Re: oops's bilge liner.

the deck was soft and rot was an issue through out the boat.
the previous owner had thought the way to make a new deck was to throw a new piece of plywood over the old and put a rug over it.

i ripped out the old deck....tore out the wet foam and re foamed it and replaced the deck, gellcoating both sides.

(there is a lot of deck replacment threads here so ill skip that part, as we all know how to do it, ans sadly...i cant find the pictures of the deck re-foam).

after i gellcoated everything.....i started to replace the carpet on the sides of the hull.

the upholstery was totally shot, and most wood backing was rotted

Re: oops's bilge liner.

i had never done upholstery before in my life (except a seat cushion or two for my furniture store) never mind sat in front of a sewing machine.

however......it was time to learn......i searched here at iboats and mrdflores has a great thread on basic upholstery.

i purchased a singer straight stitch commercial machine.

006-1.jpg

after a little tryal and error i figgured out how to load a bobbin and started to sew.....

one thing....i didnt have a piping foot for my machine....so i decided to just make strips instead.

056.jpg

the rule of thumb in boat building....is just copy and replace what was there. however i wanted to jazz up the interior a little and made a red white blue theme.

i took the old upholstery off and took it apart stitch by stitch. this gave me a pattern for the new pieces to be cut.

before

after

054.jpg

when the upholstery phase was completed....i turned to re-surfacing the heavily oxidised gellcoat.

i started with 400 grit on a really soft pad and sanded the entire boat.
then progressively increaced the grit to 600, 800, 1000, then at 1200 i used a harder backing pad and went all the way to 1500.

the boat started to gleam.

after 1500 i took the polisher on a low speed and dry polished the boat 5 times.

randomsummerpicsandfire074.jpg

the effect of this is to be the equivalent of a 1700 sanding.

Re: oops's bilge liner.

after the dry polish.....i used farecla 200. this is a compound that fills any sanding marks and adds a sheen to the finish...

randomsummerpicsandfire066.jpg

then the glaze.....this is a non wax product that is made for gellcoat and makes the boat shine like a mirror !

randomsummerpicsandfire078.jpg

after the polish...
i decided to use one of the tricks we have been doing at the shop ......paint the drive.

this is not my drive....but the process is to scuff the drive and bell with 400 grit. and tape the stickers off.

011.jpg

then hit it with paint.

the whole thing takes 20 minits and you have a brand new looking drive.

014.jpg

deciding not to stop there... i also threw a quick coat on the motor.

hey Oops...get you a 'zipper' foot for your sewing machine...preferably one that is adustable side-to-side....shoudl be less than $10...

the zipper foot is used when sewing in zippers...(also for sewing right up against the side of piping :D )

also, thanks for the shout out at my attempt of sewing and making cushions

I remember seeing that boat on CL or Ebay a couple years back before I got my resto project boat.... Small world eh? :D

Looks 110% better now!

So how long did it take you to haul it back to BC, that's a looong drive.

Re: oops's bilge liner.

lol....we partied in vegas for a day or two.

but the drive to st georges where it snowed took 5 hrs i think....we stayed the night there cause the roads were bad.
then pushed for 20 straight hours home to kelowna.
i was using the 5 hour energy drink all the way thru washington state.
i was halucinating the last 40 minits of the drive....lol

What kind of thread did you use? And where did you get it from? Redoing the seat in my dozer and basicly used fishing line.

coats marine thread.....i got it here in canada at a place called fannys fabrics. however if you cant find it go to an upholstery shop that deals in boats.....ask them to sell you a few spools (you use lots)

Re: oops's bilge liner.

Great work as usual - did you do the seats as well?

hi bud.....hope all is going well up north.

i did not have a piping foot to do the seats.....however i did replace a frw panels in them.....what a pita with out the proper tools....thats where it really looks like a bubba job.....but still over all hardly noticable.

you can do the seats totally without piping. however you must be exact in your measurements if you are not it will look like a suit that does not quite fit....lol

All is going well - slower than initially figured as but we are making progress, we are going to focus in on our interior at the end of the season, the side panels are not in to bad of same and the engine cover will be fine. We bought new seats so that will help save time.

Splash keeps getting pushed back but mid of August seems do able as of now so see how it goes.

Anyways - keep up the great work - you write ups have been a life saver!

oops!,
Hard to believe that you haven't sewn before. doesn't look like a 20 year old boat anymore.
Nice work.
