Im just trying to find a good tutorial on how to change the water pump on my Alpha 2nd gen. I hear people saying that I have to realign the drive after I change out the waterpump. Is this only needed if I pull the whole drive? or can I still change the water pump by just removing the lower part of the leg and not need to re align?

No you don't need to realign the out drive but there are pins to align the water pump housing that should come in a complete kit. Look in the stickies section @ the top of this forum for more info and reading on other servicables.

Mercury recommends removing the drive every 100hrs or once a year to lube the splines/coupler AND check alignment.

If you haven't checked the alignment in a while it's a good idea.

no need to re align if I remove the full thing or just the bottom half?

Strictly speaking, you don't need to do it either way. But you should just as preventative maintenance.

Removing or reinstalling the drive will not "throw off" the alignment. It should be removed so you can inspect/grease the ujoints and gimbal bearing and inspect the bellows. Should be no water in the bellows.
