i recently purchased a 18hp johnson seahorse outboard motor and i need some parts for it but cant seem to find the model number on it. i was told it was a late 50s by the previous owner but he was not sure. i have looked for parts and i think its a fd series, but the only number i can find on it is #1584398. does anyone know any tricks to identifying the year or series of the motor?

Look on the transom mounting bracket. Where did you get the serial number you posted?

Re: 18hp johnson question

I found it on a quarter size piece of silver on the side of the motor and it had a small johnson emblem on top of the number

Re: 18hp johnson question

You are looking at a welch plug. You need to look on the transom mounting bracket? That is the clamp that holds the motor on the boat transom. Both the serial number and model number will be stamped on it, if it hasn't been removed.
