Thanks for all the help with my spark problem, I replaced the timer base and powerpack and sprayed some starter fluid into the carbs and lifted the fast idle lever all the way up and it fired right up. I put down the idle lever and it idled fine, then I put it in gear and throttled it up to 50-60 %. Put it in n uetral, and turned the key off , it deiseled for 10-15 seconds and then shut down. Now it backfires while cranking and feels like it's laboring to spin, almost stops and backfires while turning slowly. it's getting spark but doesn't start now, Timing messed up maybe? I need some advice on where to start. I was so happy when it fired , was I too early to celebrate? Seems like it blew some water out when it backfired while the muffs were on. does that sound right? Thank you. I seafoamed the cylinders and carbs just before I lost the spark so this is the first time it's been cranked since then could there have been some residual crud in the cylinders. I put in new plugs before it started also

sounds like your timing is too far advanced....or your fuel mix is too lean

Start with telling us what motor you have .... make, model (hp), year.

Pretty hard to help you without that info.

Sorry, I'm a newb to this, the motor is model# 140743S, it's a 1977 Evinrude 140. I just replaced the timer base and powerpack after losing spark.

What was the flywheel torqued down to (ft-lbs) when replaced?

Double check the wires from the coils to the power pack. Possible you have two of them switched on the power pack. #1 coil wire connects to terminal 10, # 2 coil wire connects to terminal 11, #3 connects to #3, #4 connects to #5.

It does sound as though the flywheel key may have sheared.

Click the thumbnail for the wiring diagram for the powerpack.

Does sound logical....worked done under flywheel---worked fine for a bit---suddenly sounds like it's out of time.......

But then again this is an outboard so logic doesn't always apply! :)
