I am new to iboats but have been getting alot of help by reading other posts but you can only go so far that way. I have a 1963 starcraft 15' with a 1963 Johnson 40 electramatic, that I purchased this year(my first boat). Here is a list of things I have done:
1. replaced the lower unit with one off of a 1963 evinrude
2. new gas tank, fuel line, primer bulb and connections
3. points and condensors gapped to .020
4. replaced gear oil with type c required for electric shift
5. and two new plugs

I am starting to get frustrated cause something happens every time I go out. First it was kicking out of gear while driving, then i got that fixed and when i was testing that the motor died hence the points and condensors. Now after all that I took it out and it idles great, shift into forward and reverse and generally speaking works great with the exception that it only goes forward at less than half speed. I watched the throttle and the butterfly opens all the way when in forward but doesnt go any faster that trolling speed. before it died last week it would get up on plane and cruise quite nice. I just need to know if anybody else has had this problem and how to fix it? I hope that this is enough info to atleast kinda understand what im going through. and here is the motor info:

1963 Johnson 40 horse super quiet electramatic
compression top cylinder 100
bottom 95
model RK-25D
serial 2342985

Thank You,
Nick

Have you checked spark, sounds like you are running one one cylinder.

i just went out and noticed oil running down from the top cylinder. I pulled the plugs out and the bottom looks dry and the top looks wet. so would that be the coil then?

maybe, but check spark. It seems like you are running on one cylinder. The oil is probably due to the fact that there is unburned fuel in that cylinder which indicates that there is likely no spark. The spark should be nice and blue able to jump at least a 1/4 inch.

I agree. It sounds like a coil issue. If the insulation on the coils are cracked all to hell, then they're due for replacement. If you end up replacing the coils, then I would suggest new sparg plug leads too. You can get by with re-using your old leads, but I would remove them completely from the armeture plate and trim off 3/8" and reconnect them to the coil. A lot of people who go through the expense of replacing the coils don't do this and they end up with a bad connection at the connection.

Pull the flywheel and inspect, could be a cracked coil, plug wire not seated, burnt points, condensor or a vacuum switch
