Oil in Bilge - 5.7Gi-B

Hi,

I changed the outdrive gear oil today and then set about changing the engine oil. I ran the engine for about 10 minutes and then opened the hatch and noticed that the bilge looked black. I hadn't used the boat for a while so figured that perhaps a bit of oil had dripped. However upon closer inspection, it was all oil in the bilge - extremely viscous and not mixed with water. The boat is dry stored and typically when I have it packed away, the bilge is dry.

I used a canister to extract approximately 3 liters of oil and I'd guess there's another 3 liters of black oil in the bilge. I changed the oil filter and the filter was full of oil - no leaks in the filter. There is no oil running from the top of the engine or the front of the engine so I'm really perplexed.

I've only ever extracted oil using a canister - so that leads me to wonder if perhaps the problem lies in the sump. I assume that if the sump plug (does it have one??) let go, then I'd have extracted very little oil from the sump into the canister which isn't the case.

So my question is; what sort of thing can have gone wrong? There is no 'wreckage' of sump in the bilge and the oil pressure looks fine.

Hoping someone can help as I'm well out of ideas - I'm also assuming that the outdrive is a sealed unit and that if oil had leaked from the outdrive, it would have been 'new' oil and not the old oil.

My 5.7 had same problem; cleaned oil pan and found a pinhole leak.
Pushed it with a screwdriver and it went right thru.
The cleaning part was the worst but it helped the engine removal.
hope yours is just a seal.

Re: Oil in Bilge - 5.7Gi-B

I've just had an inspection and there is a possibility that the nut/bolt/fitting at the back of sump is loose. I can't locate a picture but before we can confirm this, I need to clean the bilge out which I'll do on the weekend.

It would make sense as if there was oil pressure and if I extracted oil, then you'd assume that the oil was sitting in the 'front' of the sump and therefore the leak was from the rear of the sump, perhaps from this fitting.

Does anyone have any photos, diagrams or links that would show the sump layout of a 5.7gi-B ?

Thanks in advance!!

** UPDATE - Re: Oil in Bilge - 5.7Gi-B

Looks like the sump plug is the main cause so that and the seal has been replaced. However, it looks like the previous owner has at some stage had a hole in the sump and put some sort of goo or sealant there to cover the hole. It wasn't the hole which let go - it was the sump plug so what I'm wondering is can sealant's be relied on or should I just pull the engine and replace the sump?
