A few days ago i was on the river and hit a rock with my johnson and the shear pin did not break. After hitting the rock, the engine locked up and i could no longer pull the recoil. In order to get it to start again i had to turn the flywheel so i could pull the recoil and get it started again. I was able to start the motor again after turning the flywheel however the waterpump stopped working. Not only does the waterpump not work, but the motor will not shift gears properly now, which it did fine before i hit the rock. I took the head and lower unit off to check the imperller for damage and found nothing wrong. Any ideas????

There must be some damage to the lower unit that you have not seen. You pulled the power head off? When you pulled the lower unit did it spin over like it should? Was the driveshaft bent? The shifter linkage may have bent also.

I pulled the power head and lower unit completely off. When I pulled the lower unit to check the impeller the drive shaft appeared to be fine. The shaft that connects to the shifter was a little bent. I can still manage to get the motor to go through all three gears, however sometimes it will only neutral and reverse or vice versa and when this happens if i turn the fly wheel a bit, it will shift into all three gears. I tried pulling the skag to look to see if there was any gear damage, but one screw managed to strip. Any other ideas on why the waterpump may not be working?

Have you checked the splines in the crankshaft? The hit may have taken out already damaged splines, enough that they catch periodically to give the illusion that it "might" work... They tend to rust out on motors that don't get the driveshaft splines greased properly when reassembling...

Sounds to me like you broke the shock absorber. Is the bearing housing below the water pump broken or bent?

Not being able to shift gears when not running is a non-issue. Something has to be rotating so they can "fit".

I checked the splines on the crankshaft and they appear to be fine. However i havent pulled the driveshaft out to inspect the bottom of it. When i figure out how to get this stripped screw out, i plan to look at the gears and see how they look. Where exactly is the shock absorber located at? When i had the waterpump housing taken apart nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.

Below the water pump is a bearing housing. Below the bearing housing is the shock absorber. The absorber just pulls out. They will look just fine, unless you look carefully inside to see if the spring is broken. Even then, you can't see it unless you get all the oil out and get out in a bright light (sunlight).

I agree, sounds like a bust shock absorber!
