my battery in my 89 maxum outboard is not showing a charge voltage with the motor running, so assuming its the alternator... i was reading that the starter/alternator is the same part. So if this is correct, could this part still start the boat and not charge the battery? or since its still starts, maybe its wiring from the alternator to the battery thats the issue?

Could someone shed some light on this for me?

Thank you.

Re: 89 force 125 outboard alternator question

Hello,
The charging system is controled by a rectifier. Under the flywheel is a ring with copper wire wrapped around it called the stator. When the motor spins an AC current is produced. A rectifier turns AC into DC, that DC should charge your battery. Make sure the volts don't exceed 14.5 or your bake your battery. You may also want to get a voltage regulator/rectifier instead.
My boat has no charging and no tach signal. I went to Radio Shack and bought a full wave rectifier for under $4.
Hope this helps,
Tom

From my reading here, you need near WOT to have enough juice to do any charging.

Put a meter on the two yellow and something wires on the rectifier. Use the AC and 30 volt position. You should have between 16 and 22 volts AC depending on the rpm. If you have this, your alternator is good.

Put the meter accross the Red and Black wires coming off the rectifier. Use the DC and 30 volt position. You should see above battery voltage with the engine running in the fast idle position @2000 rpm. If the voltage stays at 12v and below, you have a bad rectifier.

The rectifier that Radio Shack sells works good. My tach works once again and I am getting a charge to the battery. However, the charge will startout around 13 volts and climb past 15 volts. At that time I shut the motor off so I wouldn't cook it. I need a voltage regulator/rectifier. See link below

See the sticky at the beginning of the Force engine forum if you want to use the universal regulator.
