Plywood, then seal it in resin and it will outlast you.

Re: Question about wood interior.

I would try to stay away from Poplar, it has very poor rot resistance and is very low on the 'strength scale'. I suppose if budget is tight, what you are doing isn't too structural, and it can be kept reasonably protected I'd consider spruce or fir.

Re: Question about wood interior.

Poplar is a paint grade wood in my opinion. It?s not very attractive. Mahogany is not all that expensive but teak is very pricy.
I work in a wood shop and one of our customers is http://www.neptunusyachts.com/ They use a lot of cherry, again not very expensive and finishes beautifully.
If you are worried about it getting wet and rotting then maybe white oak might be a good choose. Make sure you get white oak, not red oak. Red oak won?t hold up to the moisture.

I am going to M.L.C.C. in NY , they are half the price of anyone around here for mahogany.

Have you thought about using cypress? It is very rot resistant and pest resistant.

Cabot stain is some of the best around. I have a friend who is a world class chainsaw carver, and he sprays the cabot spar varnish on all his carvings. 1 coat will protect those carvings for years! I bought a carved bear from him 5 years ago to give to my dad for fathers day. The bear has not been recoated and still looks like new.

I have used cabot to stain my deck, and it has held up great!

At least here in Washington, the deck on my house will see a lot more weather over the year than the deck on my boat will.
