Hi im new to this forum apart from using it for a bit of information over the last few years i've only just registered. This is are 3rd boat but is a bit of a project its a 1994 maxum 1900sr. With a 4.3 merc thats just been fully rebuilt by the previous owners at a cost of 2200. Now there are a few problems we need to iron out it would be great if any of you could shed some light etc.

Firstly the trim gauge will not work it has power and has a good ground. I reran the wiring from the S termintal to the trim sender (which was disconnected when we bought the boat) i simply ran 1 wire from the trim gauge s terminal to the trim sender and the other wire of the trim sender to ground. Is this correct as the wire (a brown and white one) which was on the s terminal of the gauge seemed to go onto the connector / loom which feeds the engine and not anywhere need the trim sender wires. Basically as it is now the gauge stays fully up and then just jumps to fully down. I've taken the trim sender apart and cleaned everything and the wiring to the trim sender is fine. Yet it still wont work im told i might need a new cardon ring.

Secondly the fuel gauge is very unaccrurate and jumps all over the place like it has an electrical problem i have not looked in it yet but suspect faulty ground or dodgy float level thing. Any ideas?.

And last thing the speedo does not work if you take the pipe of the leg and blow through it you can see the needle rise but plug it backin and use the boat and you get no speed reading.

Thanks for your help and what a great forum you have

cheers seb

Your trim sender may just need adjustment, they can be very touchy.

The pitot tube needs to be down in the water. Also check for obstructions like mud or plant matter.

Pitot tube is a plastic piece that on my boat is on the right side of the outdrive and a small rubber hose leads from it up the stern and into the boat to the gauge at the dash. Even the smallest bit of dirt or debris can and will clog these up and cause no or innaccurate speed readings.

OK i think ours has a pipe that just clips onto a plug on the sterndrive by the gear change linkage and bellows, its a alpha one gen 2 i think, should it still have this plastic thing with a tube etc

Your's could connect via a tube to a small hole on the leading edge of the lower unit just above the gearbox.

Yeah thats how it connects, if i take the pipe of the connector by the gearbox the pipe that disapears through the transom and onto the speedo that is and blow on it the gauge moves but plug in back in and nothing even at WOT
