I have a 1977 25hp johnson tiller. I just took apart the leg today.. and when i put it back together and tried to pull start it in neutral the prop was spinning. And then when it was in forward and i pulled the prop didnt spin. Would this be from me hooking up the shifting rod wrong? or did i do something else wrong? thanks.

also, my engine kept kicking out of gear the other day and then when it was in forward the prop didnt spin and it was like it was in neutral. It spun in reverse fine but didnt go in forward. I looked around the websites and it was talking about the clutch dog and the forward gear, i checked them out today and they looked fine, but there was a broken pin that keeps the prop in place, i replaced that and it seems to be alright, my question was if you guys think thats the only thing that was wrong. thanks again.

Re: spinning prop

I think you better check and adjust the gears, and the pin shouldnt be broken.

Re: spinning prop

Sounds like you didn't get your shift rod back in right so you probably just need to get that sorted out.

Re: spinning prop

There are two pins.
A cotter pin that secures the nut on the end of the shaft and the drive pin which transmits the drive from the shaft to the prop. #1 and #54 in the diagram HERE

The ends of the upper and lower shift rods should be fully inserted into the clamp #8 and the screws should be located in the grooves in the ends of the rods.

Hopefully you did not remove screw #46. If you did then the selector mechanism #20 thru #23 may have dropped out of place
