shifter not shifting

We own a 1995 19.5' bowrider Larson with a 175hp Johnson 6 cylinder and the shifter won't shift. The motor starts and idles normally but shifting doesn't happen. The mechanical linkage to the motor is visibly shifting on command but the motor makes no attempt to slip into a gear. Two days ago it drove normally. I'm new to boats but not motors but it's looking a lot like chinese to me. Any help would be awesome, thanks!

Re: shifter not shifting

By shift linkage are you referring to the cables attached to the actual throttle or a linkage in the motor? I can see the cables moving behind the interior panel and also moving in the motor (once the cover is off) so I'm a little lost as to where to look next...is there another part of the motor related to shifting that I'm missing?
