The timing marks on the magneto and it's pulley seem obvious but I can't identify the Flywheel to Block timing marks. Do I have to remove the recoil mechanism to find them?

I assume that the throttle cam timing mark should be set to point to the center of the roller that moves the cam. Is that correct?

On previous post I forgot to mention that it is a "Fat 50" 50HP V4.

It may not be as obvious as you think. There are three marks to align on the magneto. One on the pulley, one on the breaker plate, and that one extends down underneath the plate, where it must align with the third one on the mounting bracket.

As for the flywheel, there is a mark on the flywheel. And a mark on the recoil starter, and one on the cylinder right below the recoil starter one. Align the flywheel between them both.

The throttle cam is a whole different separate procedure.

Timing marks on block and recoil starter are on the top rear of the motor block. Once you find them, turn the flywheel to match 'em up.

Re: 1958 Johnson Ignition Timing

I think I have it now:

1 - Line up the flywheel timing mark (it is marked "timing" but is quite hard to see!) with the mark on the block that is located at about 7-8 o'clock (with 6o'clock being the rear of the motor).

2 - Line up the mark on the magneto pulley with the one below it, temporarily ignoring the middle vertical mark between them. Install the belt while noting that the finest adjustment is one belt notch. Presumably if it's not close, the belt is stretched and needs replacing.

3 - Adjust the multi-part throttle-to-magneto linkage so that the previously ignored magneto middle mark matches the other two and the mark on the throttle cam points to the middle of the throttle actuating roller.

Correct me if you see an error! I won't have a chance to fire it up for about two weeks...
