Just bought my first outboard and another for spares. They are 1976 35hp 35el76g.Neither outboard has been started for years. My question is that I purchased 2 brp new water pumps and each came with 2 gaskets. No where in the manual or in the literature do they mention them. Should I use them or install without. There was also a small piece of curved plastic in each kit and I dont know what they are for.Can anybody help, ive waited 65years for my own boat and want to go fishing.

Re: 35hp water pump

Look at the parts list for a parts diagram of your motor at BRP_ Evinrude website. The 'small piece of curved plastic' is the impeller key, which may or may not be right for your motor. My recollection is a metal key for your motor, but I could be wrong. Can't tell from the parts list diagram what the key should look like.

Is this the kits you bought: 0388256 WATER PUMP REPAIR KIT. Models with "G" Suffix (4 bolt)??

You need to look at the impeller to see if the key will work with it. Should have a machined keyway in the impeller hub.

It looks the same but I am only a novice.I put motor back together while waiting for pumps to arrive from USA,now the weather outside is miserable cold and wet so will check further when the sun shines.Still like to know about the gaskets assuming it is correct. Will let you know.

Re: 35hp water pump

Well I checked drive shaft and impellers.they do have a metal key.It is the correct water pump only the kits must have been supplied with the wrong plastic keys.To my mind there is no way they could fit the impeller. My problem is I am working on two motors. One key is missing and the other wont come out and someone has damaged that one.I think I can still use it if I pull the drive shaft out with key still in it and put it back in after metal plate. Is it o/k to go that way or will I cause further damage. Can someone please help.
