I'm almost certain that I have to change the clutch dog on a 64 evinrude I just got. Any advice from anyone? How do I drop the lower unit on this motor...I removed the 4 bolts but it's hung up on the shifter linkage...On my 74' 115hp johnson I had to spread the fingers of the linkage arm just under the engine...I can't figure out where the disconnect is on this little guy...any help would be appreciated!....Also, can I flip the clutch dog around on this model since it will only be used as a kicker for fishing???? It runs excellent except at Idle so I don't need to do anything else in order to us it fishing this weekend...

Post the model number, Evinrude didn't make a 9.9 in 64.

Yup 9.5.

You need to take one of the shift linkage bolts out , possibly spread the connector to get it to come out, the lower should just drop. Can you see the linkage? The dog's are still available, ebay has 2 listed, 377458 but you may need a gear as well, you'll know when you get it apart.

Where are those located at...I can get about 3/8" separation when I pull on the lower unit and it looks like there are two small bolts with nuts on the linkage...is one of these what you are talking about??? Or are they located somewhere else...I don't want to make more work for myself by removing the wrong bolt (happens a lot  )

thanks for the info!

you're there...remove the lower screw completely and the linkage should release allowing the lower unit to drop down

You can't reasonably expect to repair the problem without a manual to guide you thru it. A factory service manual is best, but anything is better than nothing.
Thsi isn't a chat room. If you post a question about reassembly, it might be a day or two before you get an answer, and even then it might not be the answer you need.

Thanks the the info guys...that was all I needed! I loosened up the lower bolt on the little brass linkage connector and used a screw drive to gently spread it apart and she dropped out. everything else was strait forward. I did realize that if you shift the motor into forward before separating the lower it gives you a little more room to reach in and access the linkage connector. the It's so much more enjoyable to work on a 9.5 compared to my 115, everything is so light and easy to handle. Thanks again for the info!

That's how they all come apart for the most part, neutral and reverse keeps the lower unit up, usually I just pull down on the lower and it will just shift by itself, some I have to move manually to get it to drop.
