New guy, first post...flushing a '72 25hp Sportster?

Recently acquired a skiff with what is supposed to be a 1972 25hp Evinrude Sportster. Regardless, the water pick up is on the exhaust outlet, above the propeller on the cavitation plate, I'm sure you folks know what I am describing...

So the problem I have, is that I came from an 04 Yamaha 9.9, easy to flush, attach muffs, turn on water, start engine, and observe the nice solid stream out of the side of the cowl.

This one seems much more difficult...the pickup is in a very awkward location, and while the previous owner gave me a sort of "V" fitting that goes onto the end of a hose and clamps over the water pickup, I just can't seem to get the thing to flush correctly. It does not have a bypass hole like the Yamaha did, it only has a water exit on the back of the dog leg, but even wide open, on the water, it is really only a spray, not a stream.

I've learned that the spray is correct, and it is, motor runs fine, runs cool, on the water. But I can't seem to get the thing to flush correctly, tried using the fitting, but haven't had real good luck with it. Anybody have any tips? Was considering just getting a deep bucket and running it in that to flush it, but it's a heck of a waste of water everytime to flush her out..would like to get the fitting to work out correctly..

Anybody have some experience with these engines? Perhaps there is someone who can help me out with setting up a solid stream tell-tale hole. Would help out a lot to know that the impeller is functioning correctly. I appreciate any help you folks can give me. Thanks.

Use a bucket; just have the water level high enough to cover the pump.

So that's still the best way hm? Bummer, I guess I can just do that from now on. Somewhat of a hindrance since the motor is on a huge jackplate and the darn thing is sky high when on the trailer!

Nah, from your description, it sounds like you have a Tempo Flushette. Lucky you, they are getting pretty rare and hard to find.

Are you using it properly? Clip it on, turn on the water, and start the motor. Water should come out the blow-hole on the backside, just like normal. That flushing water is going through everyplace it needs to go.

If it isn't working, I don't know what to say---it should.

The previous owner did say it was a fairly rare piece. It just seems there is more water exiting out of the top of the "V" than there should be, perhaps not causing enough water to enter the cooling system. I will have to keep fiddling with it. Maybe it isn't sealing as well as it should...

It is supposed to have a thick soft rubber liner. On the other hand, it might not be the correct one for the motor. There are different sizes.

sclay, see that rectangular plate on the side of the gearcase, just above the cavitation plate? There are about 4 holes in it. With the flushette installed, and hose turned on, there should be a healthy squirt of water out those holes. The holes are right before the water pump, so a squirt of water there means there is water available to the pump, and it should work.

Yep, looks just like that, except that in it's life it has lost the spring and catch that is attached to it. The previous owner, and myself, use a set of vice-grips to clamp it onto the pickup.

Does anyone have any pictures of inside the V? Just to see what the seal should look like...

The fitting was lined with a soft rubber sheet of < 1/8" thickness.

Still fighting with this thing...but was looking at the service manual, and wanted to clarify something, on these older mills, does the water come out the bypass immediately? It seems like it is positioned after the thermostat...which means the engine would have to warm up before anything came out the rear of the dogleg...

Or should it be coming out the bypass right when it is started? I cannot seem to get this to function at all..ran it in a bucket too. I believe I am going to pull the lower unit and see if there is something amiss...

Water should come out the exhaust relief on the rear of the leg immediatly. Thermostat makes no difference--open or closed, it should discharge a spray of water. What kind of "bucket" are you running it in? It has to be deep enough to submerge the pump before starting.

Yah I pulled the lower unit yesterday, to find a shredded impeller. Seems odd, last time I had the boat out, it was fine, good spray, right on startup. Went on a long trip, about 3 weeks, and now nothing. These can't "dry out" so to speak can they? At any rate, I am going to grab one today from the local dealer. So hopefully that will take care of it...
