setting warm up lever

what is the best way to set a warm up lever cable on motor? i have the motor running off of a hose with muffs.i know my rpm is suppose to be 1200 on hose and when u put it in water it will drop to 1000rpms.my problem is getting it set.anyone knows an easy way to do this. i would appreciate the help.it is a 1979 100 evinrude v4.so i can go rip some lip this week end thnx

that's easy...the warm-up lever should always be fully down for normal operation, and only up when the motor is cold and then only until it gets warm.

To set your idle speed, with motor idling on the muffs, turn the idle set screw until the tachometer reads about 1200.

After launching the boat, fine tune it as necessary to get it where you want it (around 700 in gear).

Your warm up lever cable & throttle cable are one in the same so what you are asking is how to set up your throttle cable.
(Your idle speed is set by advancing the timing)
Throttle cable should be set to close the carby butterflies firmly when the throttle handle is pulled back halfway between 'in gear' and neutral, this is clearly specified in the OMC manual for my '88 90HP.
I believe if this setting is done in the neutral position then the cable & controller gets overstressed causing the fast idle lever to try & rise up by itself.
A genuine manual is your best friend.
