Just put a new HEI kit, coil and starter. Will only fire after you let go of the key on the 3rd or 4th try, like it's not getting enough power, put in a second battery and try to start with trigger switch, still a no go. Got it to run in the driveway sounded good, put it in water no power, backfires and dies.
Have rebuilt carb, rewired, lower end completely rebuilt, new flywheel (ate starters last year). Have not replaced the stator. When ran last year, she would run for 15-30 min, die and refuse to start for couple of hours.

if it's only starting when you let go of the key, the ignition system isn't getting power "while" cranking which on some systems is through the starter circuit, run a wire (for testing) from the post on the start solenoid that is used to energize it to the + terminal at the Dist or where ever else is convenient.

You dont have a Vacuum Diaphram on the DIST do you ?

can you provide more info on this HEI Kit?

What did you set the timing to ?

Did you verify the firing order ?

Back firing can be a lean issue from the carb.

Check the purple/yellow wire coming from the slave solenoid to the coil + for battery voltage during starting. That wire bypasses the purple resistance wire coming from the ignition to the coil +. You might want to do a compression check just to check overall engine health.

Ran a direct wire to the coil and bypassed the solenoid. Works just fine. Otherwise just clicks while trying to start, but will fire after a few tries. Going to replace the solenoid.

Is that an external solenoid? All I have is the solenoid attached to the starter and the slave solenoid.

New solenoid helped starting. Have to have direct wire to coil won't start without it, still doggy on water, runs fine out of water of course. Someone suggested a bad vacuum advance, but doesn't have a vacuum advance as far as I can tell. Should anything else have been installed when we installed the new HEI kit?

How was it running before you put in the HEI kit? Could the new kit need an upgraded coil? Or maybe your coil isn't doing all it's supposed to do.

There is no vacuum advance on marine applications. It's time to do an advance curve analysis on the distributor.

First, let?s go back to ?last year?: Did you determine that the problem was caused by a flooding condition resulting in a carb rebuild?

You are making far too many changes at once to be able to isolate a problem without trouble shooting each system individually.

I suggest you start at the beginning. Conduct a COMPLETE tune-up setting components to factory specs. Be dead sure of your dwell, initial timing and total advance. Check that carb for flooding and adjust the choke. Pull the plugs and ?read? them for combustion chamber conditions. Verify firing order and condition of high tension leads.
Consult your Mercruiser manual for the mechanical advance progression chart.
(note that the mechanical advance is in ADDITION to initial advance)

Have to have direct wire to coil won't start without it, still doggy on water, runs fine out of water of course.

If I haven?t gone completely foggy on my color codes, you need to connect the tan wire from the ?I? terminal of the starter solenoid to the ?+? side of the coil (piggy-backed on the post with the resistance cable)
