overheat question

I have a 1988 Mercury 115 HP 2 stroke engine. We took the boat out yesterday and about a 1/2 mile on the water we noticed the engine was smoking and then that no water was coming out the spray hole. We turned off the engine and allowed it to cool. We took the cover off and started it again and watched it run to look for problems. We did this a few times and decided it was not something we could fix on the water. Anyone have any idea of how we'd know if we cracked a block or blew the engine? I've seen posts about an overheat alarm, we never heard one and I"m not even sure if our engine has one. the engine never stopped running or starting so i'm hoping that's a good sign....

Re: overheat question

You should do a compression check before you do anything else.

Re: overheat question

Tat engine probably doesn't have any overheat warning or thermostat. Do the compression test. usually #3 will be damaged first, followed by #1 cylinder. Post back results.
