I recently purchased a 64-66 Mercury 110 9.8hp outboard serial# 1908505 and had it tuned up. The first time I took it out, it ran for a few minutes and then stopped. I waited a few minutes and started it back and it ran again for a couple of minutes and stopped again. The motor was extremely hot and I never noticed any water coming from a pee hole.

I brought it back and put it in water in my garaged and looked for a pee hole but could not find one. Does this motor pee through the exhaust hole? I found the suction for the water above the propeller on the underside of the cavitation plate.

When I started it in the water tank, again no water from any place above water and the engine got really hot so I turned off before damage.

Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated!

Drop the lower end and check impeller and pump. Hope you didn't do any damaged by over heating.
I would check cylinders compression before I went any further.

Ok..is dropping the lower end a tough or difficult job. What is involved? I don't think any damage occurred since the engine will idle and run fine without any knocking noise but I shut her down before getting too hot. Thanks for the reply!

According to this diagram you can see the tell-tale as # 41. You probably need a new impeller. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...8056/BOTTOM COWL AND ADAPTOR PLATE/parts.html

Is the engine cooling water supposed to come out through the tell-tale with the engine exhaust? So I probably need a new tube and the impeller which pumps the water? Is that a difficult repair or should I take to a local boat motor repair shop? I am pretty good with mechanical stuff but never worked on boat motors.

If you have any mechanical skills, you can change an impeller.
Pretty simple.
Never replaced the tube. Copper.
My .02
Get an OEM (MERC) service Manual for that motor and you can Damn near service that motor to original
