Got an old motor and boat from a guy but hes not sure of the year. The only thing I can find is the serial # which is C554708. Its a 65 hp four cylinder. He painted the case black and i cant find anywhere to even confirm that it is in fact an Evinrude, for all I know it may be a Merc. Any help would be great!

Thanks

Evinrude could be one of these:
Year Model
1968 65832
65833
65852
65853
1972 65272
65273
1973 65372
65373
I couldn't find anything on a Merc with that S/N. Maybe somebody more knowledgeable than me will chime in.

Yep, gotta be a 1968----IF it really is a 65hp. The different '68 model numbers are short and long shaft, standard and heavy duty lower units.

Johnson motors are the same, with different hoods and model numbers.

Took the oil plug to drain the oil and quite a bit of water came out... that normal?

Nope, there shouldn't be any water in the lower unit. It should be full of oil, sounds like it might be time to pressure test the lower unit and reseal it.

If this is your first outboard I would suggest that you get the OEM service manual for your engine and do a little reading before you jump into repairs. The manual will have a lot of information on trouble shooting and repairs for your engine.
You can look on E-bay or Ken Cook, google him, for a manual.
