Had five boats rafted up yesterday afternoon, had a few lines in the water when a friend says whats that. About 15 yards off the port side of his boat a brown shape could be seen just under the surface. Over the next few min it broke the surface. It was a dead deer. We were in the middle of a 200 yard wide cove. There was no current and very little wind so the deer just floated there. One on my friends is a State Constable, and always carries a side arm. He made his way over to the end boat and with one round sent the deer back to the lakes bottom. Talk about some weird sheet, it was a little creepy/freaky watching that thing come up not being sure what the heck it was.

I'd have to agree on the creepy. Possible it died at the shoreline and belly filled with gases and it floated up?

Either way, would freak the crap outta me. I get a little startled every time a loon pops up a foot from the boat and let's out a cry, can't imagine what a dead deer would do...:p

Do you have gators up there? I once saw a deer in the st. john's river, florida, swimming with the current, just as I said to myself, "what is she doing, there are gators!" a 12 footer surfaced and swam up behind the deer and opened up his jaws and took her under. surfaced not much long after on the bank. maybe yours got snagged by a gator and rolled in the muck.

Re: Weird occurrence on the lake yesterday

My fishin buddy and I were crusing down the bank with a crankbait this spring. I caught a bunch of bass. He caught a few and a bunch of snags. We were fishing in a stumps field and the wind was blowing hard so the boat drifted quite fast. We had to stop fishing and went thru a lot of troubles a bunch of times to un-snag his lure. Suddenly, the conversation went like this:
him: hey, is that foam on the bank?
me: I dunno, it's probably a piece of plastic or somethin.
him: Oh sheet!
me: what?
him: I'm snagged. Again!
I looked back and his stump snagging CB was hooked to this mystery foam/plastic thing.
him: oh dude! it's a f'ing deer.
me: no way!
As it turned out, what appeared to be foam/plastic was the deer's hide. What looked to be root wad was the rib cage. Bambi's head and the rest of the torso were just below the water line.
me: we ain't getting that
him: but I want my CB back
me: cut it off.
him: so how am I gonna get my CB back and started pulling the carcass off the bank.
me: just cut it off, I?ll buy you another one of those POS, don?t bring Bambi to the boat.
We going fishin and you caught a f?ing deer.

There were crappie fishermans nearby. They heard the exchanges and were laughing their arses off. He reluctantly cut off his lure and tied on one of my CB, the same kind that I had on.

We were going down the St Johns River one evening, just before dark and a Deer swam right across in front of us. I had never seen anything like this before.

Weirdest one I've seen was a gray squirrel swimming across the Rum River with a cob of corn.

During hunting season it's not uncommon to see a deer swimming. I've seen that before. They'll be running away from hunters and have to cross a body of water, only one option if you're a deer. They can swim well. I have a feeling any dead deer found in the water were dragged there by some sort of predator.

This calls for a new thread. "What's the strangest thing you caught on a fishing line?"
