I have 93 4.3l OMC cobra in a four winns. I had my whole impeller stolen off the outdrive, but I didn't notice it and put the boat in the water and motored around at below wake speed until I notice the temp getting hot.

During this same time, the shifting started acting funny. When I would go from forward to neutral, it still would be in forward until I went back toward reverse alittle. Going into forward, was no problem. Before this, the shifting had been OK

The question is with the whole impeller missing, what the likely hood of water getting into areas its not supposed to be? My concern are the bolt holes for the impeller housing and the vent tube letting water in.

Thanks alot in advanced.

Can I be the first to say ...... What the hell are you talking about? Are you saying that someone took your out drive apart, stole the impeller, and then put it back together?

If it's gone, it's shredded itself, or somebody took the lower unit off, took the pieces of impeller out, and didn't put an impeller back in....

I can't imagine somebody stealing an impeller, but either way, you need to put a new one back in.

I think on some OMC's you can remove the impeller without removing the lower.

LOL... Ok, that explains a lot, but if I'm a thief, I'm taking the prop, not he impeller.

Yea on my cobra you just take a panel off of the upper gear case and then its three or four (forget) bolts to take the impeller out.

But still its only 1 cotter pin and 1 nut to get the prop off.

There are tons of other things on most boats that could be taken with no bolts, nuts, or screws to remove that would be better than an impeller.

The very only reason someone may want to take someones impeller would be to sabotage you. Think about it. They take your impeller in the middle of the night. Then you come along later on and put the boat in the water and start her up and run it.

Id bet some people wouldn't even notice the temp gauge until the alarm went off of or the thing seized.

Let me be the first to say, KermieB you are so funny, I laughed so hard I fell off my chair. All kidding aside. I hope things go well for the fellow.

Three cover bolts, three bolts for the impeller and its out. For sure they knew what they were doing. I was able to find all the replacement parts for it. I just hope there is no other damage done. Maybe their prop was better than mine.
