Ok well my grandpa gave me his boat, it hasnt been out since 94 when i was 8yo!!!! lol

He always talks about how he would like to go out on the boat but he cant get around anymore to get it going so he gave it to me.

My plan is to get it going so he can go out on it once more.... he isnt doing that great right now and is in and out of the hospital. :(

Boat: 1968 Wellcraft
Motor: 1967 Evinrude Lark V (think its a 40hp)

I got it running but didnt run it much just a few seconds..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnDFvTnAXsI

1) do i have to use type c lower unit (gear case) oil or can i use 80/90 gear oil? if i have to use type c can i get it at napa??

2) I assume its a 2 stroke motor, what do ratio do i mix? what brand type of 2 stoke oil should i use?

3) What about the motor crank case, how do i change oil in that? how about oil filter, oil brand, ect.... lol

Educate me on these things, im not familiar with them at all.... i have built several 400+ hp vehicle motors but this is my first boat/motor to work on lol..

Any advise/help im open to! I appreciate your time guys!

Thanks,

Blaine

The old C oil is now electric shift oil. You can get gear case oil at any boat place.

Yup it is a 2 stroke. Usually 50-1 mix. Use the TSW (Two Stroke Water) oil. Walmart has the synthetic blend Pennzoil at a good price.

2 stroke engines dont have crankcase oil and filter like a 4 stroke car engine.

I promise im not some young punk kid, well im young but not a punk lol... and no i didnt make up some crap about my grandpa....

He had a bypass surgery in 95 and has been weak ever since... after months of almost dying and doctors not being able to figure out what was wrong they think they finally found a possible issue.... so he just had his gullbladder removed and got an infection... and his blood pressure keeps going from one extreme to another... kinda sucks, i just hope he gets good enough to be able to go out on the boat one last time :(

I really do appreciate any help i can get ;) If worst comes to worst ill find a good running used motor, if i can give my grandpa one thing he wants to do befor he dies then ill do everything i can to make it happen!

With your help it will save me alot of headache and i really appreciate it!!!

Here is my last build (car) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79PnZuZjrpQ

Well i better get to bed, i have to be up in 5.5hrs for work....

Thanks guys!

Well put the motor into a drum and ran it for a while and it seems to run like a champ!

By the top hole on the lower unit water/exhaust coming out of there means the water pump is working correct?????

found the serial number and model number:

serial: rdsl-29e
model: j2774633

I am mixing the fuel/oil 25:1..... but seems to smoke alot of smoke, i read somewhere that they revised it to 50:1 is this correct???

Thanks guys!!!

The factory manual will be a huge benefit to you.
www.outboardboks.com

Lack of charge could be regulator ( if it has one) or the stator under the flywheel.

Fuel is comeing out of the carburator vent.... so im assuming the float (mine is cork) needs replaces or the needle...

probaby end up getting a carb rebuild kit along with a manual next paycheck... :)

is there something else that will cause the carb to spew fuel out of the float bowl vent????? im assuming not, but i know exactly where assumptions get you hahahaahahahah!

Re: Total Newbie... need some help/guidance...

Got a chance to get the boat out....

Every once in a while when i went to start it, it wouldnt start.... :( so i would pull the screw out of the bowl... pump it up again and it would fire right up!

Not sure what is causing that..... gonna rebuild the carburator but cant find a kit that includes the float..

anyone know where to get a kit with a float for a 1967 Evinrude 40hp carb # 379486 ??????

Also, it seems to run better at 3/4 throttle than it does at WOT.... could the carb also be causing this also?????

I did notice motor isnt much of a powerhouse and barely gets the boat up and moving lol.... i see guys posting about pulling a skier, hahahaha i dont think mine could even dream of doing that....

Although it will work good enought to take my grandpa fishing! ;)

Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on it, after all motors are all the same, fuel-compresion-spark and off you go. Whenever I need parts for an older motor I just go to google and put in outboard motor and then the serial nuber off the motor and have always found everyting I need. Sorry to hear about grandpa, hope he makes it out for some good fishing trips soon.
