Question Is:
I have a VIP boat with the Mercruiser 4.3 and Alpha outdrive. I need to pull the motor. Can I do this without removing the outdrive? Or do I need to remove the outdrive to remove the motor?

Thanks,

Re: Engine Removal

Pull the drive first. While you may be able to get the engine out without pulling the drive, you can't put it back in without pulling the drive.
Besides, it's only a 10 minute job to pull the drive. Put the shifter in forward, disconnect the aft trim cylinder nuts, remove 6 mounting nuts and pull the drive off.

+ ya gotta pull the drive to align it after ya put the engine back in so ya might as well pull it and make life as easy as possible for the pull and replacement. the drives gonna come off.. like Don S said. it really isn't to hard to do. get or make a drive stand. life will be good then.

I'm also about to pull one. I think specs show it's about 80 pounds or so. That sound right? Also, all fluid is contained within the drive when pulled, correct?

Re: Engine Removal

Is that a luxury or a necessity for the removal and storage?
for me, i R&R my drive by myself. so i consider it a necessity. i suppose ya might get it back on w/o one. but man. ya gotta put the drive on straight. if it's not straight, it don't go on. let alone trying to deal with the flopping around drive shaft and other things that need to take place for replacement. not accounting for the shear weight of it too. a place to store it is a by product that is nice, but likely not necessary..

agree 100% ziggy.
it doesn't take much to knock one together and makes life easier all the way around.
have made 2 now. one for alpha's and another for b-3's

having these on hand makes drive removal and installation a one man job for me. no way could i do it by my self with out them (and i tried)

have a look here. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430
look at #19. lots of other good stuff in this thread too.

i've never seen any specs. i just got the whim and found some scrap boards i had laying around and hammered mine together. it looks like it too. mines probably the worst looking of all of them, but it does work.

Re: Engine Removal

Even though I said they aren't necessary, I do have one too. Mine is made out of wood but my next one is going to be like #30 in the above post.

I can put my Duo Prop Volvo on and off by myself(No props).
