Re: Retractable Transom Tie Down

If you want them why not buy the exact same ones from iboats? We have the best customer service and iboats will price match on just about every item.

Personally I do not like the retractable straps since it is just another item to have go haywire or get clogged up with debris..... just my personal feelings.

And if you are dunking them in salt water, you have dried salts in the fabric strap grinding away wearing them out.

I love mine. I haven't lost one yet. I have put them on my last 3 boat trailers and haven't had a problem yet. I use them in freshwater only.

+1 here. On third year and still work like new after over 65 dunks. Love them. Freshwater only, too, but I think they also make a salty model.

You all realize that straps don't hold the boat on the trailer right?

Since the boat usually outweighs the trailer by 3/1; straps basically hold the trailer under the boat.

So you don't need a strap rated for your boats weight, but your trailers weight plus a safety margin.

I like the idea of the retractable, but wonder about service life.
But there are more positive comments then negative, here here!

Well as we say in the flat bed trucking world. You don't need to support the weight of your load with straps and chains, you just need to keep it from moving.

I installed BoatBuckles on my trailer a few seasons ago and love them. They seem just as strong as non-retractable straps and you can't beat the convenience of them. I only boat in freshwater but I be sure and rinse them out a few times per season.

Re: Retractable Transom Tie Down

My trailer came with retractable rear tie downs and both of them failed within the first few months. The internal spring mechanism broke on both. I completely removed them and replaced with normal everyday iBoats rear tie down straps. The time to do both is about the same. I also boat in freshwater but couldn't believe how fast they showed signs of rust. My two cents...
