White wire on the engine terminal board is tachometer signal. At the dashboard switch hook the white wire to the signal terminal on the tach, if it not long enough, attach it to an "M" terminal and run a jumper wire to the tach signal terminal. run a red power wire from the "I" terminal; od the ignition switch to the power or 12 volt terminal on the tach, and run a black ground the a common ground under the dash.

Thanks for the reply,
I have that all done. the problem I'm having is I see the white wire terminal board for the tach going to the front of the boat but nothing from the motor. so would the wire come from the coil or the cd unit?
thanks

Perchance: Does your engine have Prestolite ignition instead of distributor? Or is it perhaps Magna-Power II? I thought that until 78 they all had distributors. If it has NO distributor, then the purple wire is the tach signal and you must use a 20 pole tach.

Something else to think about, you may need to check and see if the CDI is an aftermarket unit that does not have a tach circuit, thus no white signal wire like the factory unit. Most aftermarket CDI's don't support a tach, unless you pay extra for the upgrade unit with a specific tach circuit. Hope this helps...

Yes it does have a distributor
well I hooked the tach up the purple wire and to a + wire and the tach seems to be working ok. my tach is a chrysler with 2 wires not sure if that's right but it's working.:confused:
