I have had trouble with this for the last couple years and it is getting worse.
when i go to cold start my johnson 15 electric with remote controls it always floods. after cleaning plugs it will foul again and again and sometimes it will fire and run perfect after burning out the built up oil. I will start and run fine all day long one i get it started. I unhook the fuel line and run it out of fuel most everytime and that will help some times but most of the time if floods again and again. PLEASE HELP, i want to go fishing.
I have:
Rebuilt the carb
Bought a new battery
New Fuel tank with correct fuel ratio
New fuel lines
compression is 105/103
New plugs gapped at .030
remember once it starts then i am good to go all day long, so spark doesn't seem to be the issue.

any and all advice would help

Re: cold start flooding

I feel for you. I'm having same issue with my 40 HP electric start.

You say you have controls but I'm not sure what your starting procedure is. With mine you push in the key and then crank it. I use it infrequently and like yours once it does fire I'm good for the rest of the day. The next time I stat mine cold I am going to turn the key and once it starts to crank I'm going to push the key in and see if that stops it from flooding. Best of luck. Rick.

It would help if you would post your model number so we what engine we were working on.

Depending on the year and model, Pushing in the key either activates the primer circuit or the choke.. If your motor is actually flooding, pushing it in will make it worse.

Pump the bulb, turn on the key, push it for the count of 5 or so (different for different motors), and then turn the key to start it. You may need to push the key in a couple times to keep it running at first.

Re: cold start flooding

I didn't mean to steal davidspellman 's post but but thanks for the reply. Mine is a 1995 40 HP Johnson. It has a primer. If I were to count to 5 it would be badly flooded for sure. My plan for next time is just one quick bump and see if that does the trick.

Now davidspellman I'm hoping yours has a primer too so we both can get something from your post. Sorry to have jumped in. Rick.

Re: cold start flooding

that's ok as far as jumping in as long as we both have the same problem and we each find help.
worked on it today, Johnson 15 j15releuc model 1997 with electric start. it does have the primer circut.
i have tried every different combination of starting proceedures i can think of.
pump bulb till slightly hard (once or twice) turn key wait for alarm test to finish then lift throttle half way and start without electronic richen, then done the same with turning key to start and holding richen in once, then for 2 sec. I have tried not using the throttle at all and using the electronic richen once and also more. I have tried using the manual richen lever in combination also. today I took plugs out and cleaned with carb cleaner and let set in sun and the cylinders air out and when i put them back in i manual levered with half throttle and it fired and blue smoke for some time and then finally cleared up and ran great. restarted later and again ran great, but.... tomorrow if i go to start it, i can bet the farm that it will flood. what is by your opinion (the best sequence to starting my engine)????. and if you can help me with the flooding i would give you my firstborn.

Re: cold start flooding

Well like I said next try I will just bump the primer while the motor is already turning over. If you pump your primer bulb and it gets rock solid and stays that way then your not leaking gas into the carb. Rick.
